daily ai × crypto news in 5 minutes. no hype, just what matters.

morning. wednesday it was bitcoin miners. thursday it was seoul and tokyo. same question everywhere: who pays for the ai build-out if rates go up again?

the big one

the ai trade cracked in asia. south korea's kospi closed −7.57% at a six-month low, after falling as much as 9.29% and triggering a 20-minute circuit breaker. sk hynix −11.1%, samsung electronics −9.5%. foreigners were net sellers of 3.6 trillion won (~$2.7b). (reuters via yahoo finance)

japan's nikkei 225 fell 4.9%, with softbank, a big openai investor, down 10% and memory maker kioxia down 11%. the night before, the nasdaq lost 1.9% and the s&p 500 1.1%, its worst day since july. (the guardian)

crypto got the preview a day earlier. on wednesday the wgmi bitcoin-miner etf dropped 10.7% while bitcoin fell roughly 2%. the miners that pivoted hardest to ai fell most: iren −12.2%, cipher −12.3%, hut 8 −10.5%, and coreweave (a former miner) −15.5%. same day, gartner warned that more than $3.5 trillion in ai infrastructure investment could face impairment by 2030. (crypto briefing)

one-day move on wed oct 14: btc about -2%, hut 8 -10.5%, wgmi etf -10.7%, iren -12.2%, cipher -12.3%, coreweave -15.5%

the takeaway: the market isn't doubting ai demand. it's doubting whether debt-funded ai capex pays back at higher rates. that's the same rate question bitcoin is trading on.

ai

the ftc subpoenaed openai and anthropic. axios reports the agency sent civil investigative demands on wednesday, more than 50 pages each, asking for documents on safety incidents, safeguards, marketing and privacy policies. it also plans to compel top executives to testify. same day, eight states (iowa, kansas, nebraska, west virginia, arkansas, arizona, idaho, montana) sued openai under consumer-protection laws over chatgpt's safety for kids. (axios, nbc news)

anthropic told investors q3 revenue hit $16.8b. up 45% from $11.6b in q2 (and $4.7b in q1), and attendees said the company claimed adjusted profitability for the quarter. it's targeting a valuation above $2 trillion; the ipo likely waits until after the november midterms. on the day asia dumped ai stocks, this is the bull case in one line. global regulators want humans back in the loop on ai agents. the financial stability board's final guidance says higher-risk agent use cases need more intensive human oversight, with clear triggers for when an agent must ask a human. it also dropped the idea of treating ai as "synthetic employees." relevant to anyone building agents that touch money. crypto

~$483m in btc and eth futures got liquidated. ether took ~$286m of it vs ~$197m for bitcoin, despite a smaller futures market (~$30b open interest vs ~$52b). zec fell ~13%. cme fedwatch odds of an october hike spiked to almost 47% after cpi, then cooled to ~26%. (coindesk, coindesk)

agent payments: big counts, tiny value. ripple is adding stripe-owned privy wallets to the xrp ledger so apps and ai agents can hold and spend xrp and rlusd. the xrpl ai hub shows 14.3m cumulative agent transactions, but only ~6,991 xrp and ~12,752 rlusd moved in total. on base, chainalysis counted 138m+ x402 payments, and more than 87% were worth 10 cents or less. the rails are live; the revenue isn't yet. (coindesk, coindesk)

metamask shipped an agent wallet on grok bot. self-custodial, with user-set limits and protocol allowlists. supports swaps, cross-chain txs, and perps, plus simulation, threat scanning, and mev protection. setup via cli/skills for claude code and cursor. agents can spend, inside the box you draw. (tokenpost)

also: standard chartered pushed its $2t stablecoin call from 2028 to 2030, with supply stuck near $309b (cointelegraph). kraken parent payward agreed to buy lithuania's saldo bank, closing expected in 2027 (cointelegraph).

one thing to watch

today, 8:30 et: september ppi. bls publishes producer prices for september. august final-demand ppi was +0.4% m/m and +5.4% y/y. consensus is +0.6% m/m. after a hot cpi, a second hot print would make the oct 28 hike case harder to dismiss. (bls, investing.com)

still on the board: zcash nu7 decision oct 20 (75s→25s blocks, nov 5 target), and the fed oct 27–28. (coindesk)
