daily ai × crypto news in 5 minutes. no hype, just what matters.
evening. the world's biggest rocket company just told investors its biggest business is now ai, and that it never sold its bitcoin. then elon musk floated folding tesla into it. that's the big one. also: anthropic's leaked ipo filing shows an $80.7b paper loss, perplexity's agent now runs fully on a mac, and france wants exchanges on the hook for defi blowups. (this morning's quick read, with mastercard's agent payments and drift's stolen eth, is in today's news of the day.)
the big one
spacex's ai unit just outgrew starlink. in its q3 results on tuesday, spacex reported revenue of $14.6b, up 161% from $5.6b a year ago, and net income of $4.4b versus a $1.1b loss. the driver is the segment it calls "super intelligence," the former xai business with grok, the cursor coding app it bought in august, and a fast-growing compute rental arm. that segment made $7.56b, up 830% year over year. starlink and the rest of connectivity made $5.25b. rockets made $1.77b. (spacex q3 release)
where the ai money comes from: $7.0b of it is "solutions & infrastructure," mostly new cloud-services deals where other companies rent spacex's gpus, plus $608m from cursor since the deal closed on aug 14. advertising on x added $538m. on the call, management said new compute deployments currently pay back in "less than a year" and that pricing is tracking slightly above the high end of $30–$50 per watt. (spacex, earnings call transcript)
the catch is the bill. spacex spent $16.4b on ai capex in the quarter alone, more than double the segment's revenue, and nearly $40b this year. nameplate compute hit 1.7 gigawatts, up from 0.6 a year ago. it's the same ai capex race we covered with anthropic in #005: whoever owns the power and chips sets the price, for now. (spacex)
now the crypto part. spacex's balance sheet still shows $1.573b in digital assets at sept 30, down from $1.637b at the end of 2025, a $64m paper loss as bitcoin slid. spacex doesn't break the number down, but its june ipo filing disclosed 18,712 btc, and the value matches that stack at the sept 30 price. in other words, it held through the dip. (spacex, benzinga)
and then the twist. asked about combining with tesla, musk said: "do i think it would be a good idea? yes." both boards have formed special committees of independent directors, though musk said calling a deal "a certainty" would be overstating it. tesla holds 11,509 btc, so a merged company would sit on 30,221 btc, about $2.5b, one of the largest corporate stacks outside a crypto treasury company. spacex shares rose about 10% on wednesday and bitcoin climbed back above $84,000 as tech rallied. (cointelegraph, decrypt, coindesk)
the takeaway: nobody is buying bitcoin here. the story is that two of the most-watched balance sheets in the world kept theirs through a rough year, and a merger would put all of it in one public vehicle with quarterly disclosures and fair-value accounting. meanwhile the real money machine is renting ai compute. a rocket company now looks like a cloud company with a bitcoin reserve. more: bitcoin · ai

anthropic's leaked s-1: $16.3b in revenue, an $80.7b loss, and a huge compute tab. the wall street journal saw a draft of anthropic's ipo prospectus. first-half 2026 revenue was about $16.3b, up from $1.1b a year earlier, with ~20% from just two customers. the net loss was $80.7b, but about $72b of that is non-cash accounting charges tied to convertible notes and other funding instruments. it spent close to $9b on compute in six months and has about $450b in mostly noncancellable cloud commitments, with up to $750b in future compute spending planned. reported, not yet public. (wsj, reuters, fortune)
perplexity's computer agent now runs fully on your mac. a new local-first mode runs both the model and the agent on device, even offline, and can work with notes, messages, mail and numbers; files only go to the cloud if you approve. it ships with qwen 3.6 and pplx pro as local models, is for pro, max and enterprise subscribers, and wants an apple silicon mac with at least 36gb of memory. crypto & markets
france wants exchanges liable for some defi blowups. in a joint response to the eu's review of mica, the bloc's crypto rulebook, france's treasury, markets regulator amf, central bank and acpr proposed that licensed platforms "should be liable for certain incidents affecting clients where they actively facilitated access" to defi protocols, for example by skipping vetting or ignoring known risks. mica currently excludes fully decentralized services. the commission's report to lawmakers is due by june 30, 2027. (cointelegraph)
blackrock wants to sell bitcoin with a seatbelt. it filed for the ishares bitcoin managed protect etf (proposed ticker pbit), which would use options on its $65b+ ibit fund to cap some upside in exchange for a level of downside protection. protection isn't guaranteed, and no fee or launch date was given. (the block, the block daily)
bitcoin is back above $84k, but it's riding tech. about 80% of the top 500 coins were green over 24 hours, and wintermute's jasper de maere calls $87,000 the next test, while noting the move is tied to equities, not a crypto catalyst. us spot bitcoin etfs added just $23.16m on tuesday after monday's $526.6m, while solana etfs logged a 12th straight day of outflows. tool of the day
ollama: the simplest way to run open models like gpt-oss, gemma or deepseek on your own computer, with one command and a local api your apps and agents can call. running models on your own hardware is free and unlimited; optional cloud plans for bigger models start at $20/mo. for builders who want perplexity-style local ai without sending data anywhere. one thing to watch
the tesla committee. if the independent directors move toward a deal, the terms will decide who ends up owning 30,221 btc, and whether a merged musk company reports bitcoin swings every quarter next to grok and robotaxis. on the market side: does bitcoin clear $87k, or stay a passenger on the nasdaq?
that's the wire. rockets fund the ai, the ai funds the rockets, and the bitcoin just sits there. back tomorrow. — gweiwire
