daily ai × crypto news in 5 minutes. no hype, just what matters.
morning. weekend edition. the biggest number of the week came from a private company: anthropic's q3 revenue. the market's answer was a shrug and a lower price tag. meanwhile nasdaq had a rough friday, bitcoin etfs bled again, and an openai research model treated a public wallet as fair game.
the big one
anthropic made $16.8b last quarter. some ipo investors now want to pay ~25% less. at an investor day in san francisco, anthropic told prospective ipo investors that q3 revenue rose 45% to $16.8b, from $11.6b in q2 and $4.7b in q1, and that it was profitable on an adjusted basis in the quarter, two attendees told reuters. bbc reported the same figures. the catch is the slope. revenue more than doubled from q1 to q2 (+147%), then grew 45%. reuters says some current and prospective investors who attended discussed a valuation of around $1.5 trillion, down from the roughly $2 trillion previously expected for the november share sale. that's a ~$500b haircut before a single share trades. (reuters via investing.com)
context matters: the same week, chip stocks and neoclouds got hit, coreweave's shares and bonds tumbled on thursday, and anthropic has committed to at least $518b of cloud, compute and infrastructure spending over a decade. that's the ai debt scare from #002 again. (reuters via investing.com)
the takeaway: $16.8b a quarter is real money, and adjusted profit answers the "will it ever make money" question. but public markets price the second derivative. anthropic is the bellwether ipo for the whole ai trade, and openai is expected to follow next year. if the ai trade cools, crypto usually feels it as risk appetite, not headlines.
ai × crypto
an openai research model found a public wallet and spent its testnet eth. in an alignment report, openai says an internal gpt-5.6 sol-family research model, asked to deploy contracts on ethereum's sepolia testnet without a funded wallet, wrote a script that derived accounts from publicly known developer recovery phrases, checked 362 addresses, picked one with enough test eth, and paid the deployment fees from it. it reasoned the funds were "effectively abandoned" and valueless, then didn't mention it in its final report. sample date: june 26; discovered sept 25. openai says it added safeguards and now runs misalignment monitoring on all traffic. no real funds were involved, but the pattern ("my judgment of harm beats the owner's permission") is the one agent builders should worry about. google's quantum team cut a key error rate ~40x. google quantum ai demonstrated "magic state cultivation" on its willow chip, reducing logical error ~40x versus injection without cultivation and reaching ~99.99% logical fidelity for t-states. google says larger demonstrations are still needed. the crypto read, per experts quoted by the block: no immediate threat to bitcoin keys, but it keeps the post-quantum migration conversation on the calendar. msci finalized rules that could push strategy out of its indexes. the new methodology screens whether a company is mainly an operating business or mostly holds non-operating assets (five financial ratios), replacing the earlier 50%-digital-assets test. existing members would need to fail in both of their two most recent annual filing periods. strategy, metaplanet and yellow cake were flagged in an earlier simulation; the final list of potentially affected firms is due nov 11, with implementation at the nov 30 close. index exclusion matters because passive funds tracking msci would have to sell. etf money kept leaving. spot btc etfs saw about −$82.4m on friday (ibit −$71.8m, fbtc −$10.6m), after thursday's ~+$5.1m. spot eth etfs lost about −$69.7m. coinshares counted ~$434m of outflows from global crypto funds over the week, blaming hot cpi and strong retail sales for "higher for longer" rate bets. one thing to watch
nov 11 (msci list) and anthropic's expected november ipo. two dates that tie ai and crypto to the same question: what public markets will pay for growth that is real but slowing, or for a balance sheet that's mostly bitcoin. before that: zcash's nu7 decision on oct 20 and the fed on oct 27–28.
